A Crossville woman lost thousands recently in a Social Security scam. The victim said she received a call from a subject going by the name of Shane Marker who claimed to be with the Social Security Office. The victim was told that she needed to send money to the Social Security Office and was first instructed to send them money on Bitcoin. When the transaction would not go through, the caller instructed the woman to buy gift cards and give them the numbers off the back, which she did. The victim’s sister, realizing it was a scam, got on the phone and told the caller that she was going to call the police. The caller hung up on her but by then he had already gotten at least $2,300. Do not fall for this scam. Social Security will never call you up and ask you to buy Bitcoin, gift cards or ask for your credit card or bank account information.
